Propaganda

Oversimplification of language:
Orwell lists these three examples of oversimplification in political language along with what they really mean if one were to unpack them:
Pacification = Defenceless villages are bombarded from the air, the inhabitants driven out into the countryside, the cattle machine-gunned, the huts set on fire with incendiary bullets
Transfer of population = Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry
Elimination of unreliable elements = People are imprisoned for years without trial, or shot in the back of the neck or sent to die of scurvy in Arctic lumber camps

Quotes

The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly… it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.
– Joseph Paul Göbbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister

Not every item of news should be published. Rather must those who control news policies endeavor to make every item of news serve a certain purpose.
– Joseph Paul Göbbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister

Without some form of censorship, propaganda in the strict sense of the word is impossible. In order to conduct propaganda there must be some barrier between the public and the event.
– Walter Lippmann

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.
– Robert A. Heinlein

Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state.
– Noam Chomsky (Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda)

The propagandist’s purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human.
– Aldous Huxley

There are laws to protect the freedom of the press’s speech, but none that are worth anything to protect the people from the press.
– Mark Twain

The point of public relations slogans like “Support our troops” is that they don’t mean anything… That’s the whole point of good propaganda. You want to create a slogan that nobody’s going to be against, and everybody’s going to be for. Nobody knows what it means, because it doesn’t mean anything. Its crucial value is that it diverts your attention from a question that does mean something: Do you support our policy? That’s the one you’re not allowed to talk about.
– Noam Chomsky

Some people think official propaganda is designed to deceive us. It isn’t. If it were, it would be much better constructed.
It is designed to provide people who are already brainwashed with talking points to mindless repeat at us … like the members of an enormous cult.

White House deletes absurd tweet after CNN, Twitter slap with fact checks

https://zerohedge.com/political/thats-quite-spin-white-house-fact-checked-cnn-and-twitter-after-absurd-social-security
The Biden Administration’s latest attempt to rebrand terrible economic news as good news was so blatant that even CNN’s fact-checker Daniel Dale called them out.
In a Tuesday tweet, the White House claimed that “Seniors are getting the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years through President Biden’s leadership.”
Except, that’s only because it’s tied to inflation - which has skyrocketed.
“That’s quite the spin,” Dale responded, adding “The size of Social Security checks is linked, by law, to inflation. This year’s increase is unusually big because the inflation rate is unusually big.”
Biden: “Inflation is a worldwide problem right now because of a war in Iraq… excuse me, the war in Ukraine. I’m thinking about Iraq because that’s where my son died.”
Biden’s son was never in Iraq and died on US soil of brain cancer.
And what did the regime media call Biden’s lie about his son? ‘Verbal fumbles’

The Twitter Files: The corporate media ignores the biggest story of the decade

By “Tyler Durden”, posted Dec 12, 2022
https://zerohedge.com/political/twitter-files-corporate-media-ignores-biggest-story-decade
The biggest story of the past decade is not the covid pandemic, the January 6th protests, the war in Ukraine, the BLM riots, or even the stagflationary crisis in the US. Behind these major events is another story, one that connects them all together in a disturbing way. Even more important than the effects of geopolitical and economic chaos is the effect of mass censorship; without the free exchange of information and debate the public remains ignorant. And if the public remains ignorant, crisis events have an increasing potential to explode.
Public perception of national and international affairs is a key determinant of the outcome of disasters and conflicts. This is why governments and elitists from around the world often seek to manipulate the ways in which people digest information. The idea is rather simple - They believe that ‘we the people’ cannot be allowed to come to our own conclusions. They think we cannot be trusted to develop the “proper” viewpoints and we are not smart enough to understand the implications of governmental decisions.
In other words, they believe the exact opposite of what is outlined in the US Constitution.
The establishment will give numerous reasons why they need to censor, suppress, spin and misrepresent the facts of any given situation, but in the end the real rationale is that they have a vision for society that is contrary to our foundations. They have appointed themselves the arbiters of reality to see that vision done. As Edward Bernays, the “father of public relations” once stated in his book ‘Propaganda’:

The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country… We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society… In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons… who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.
– Edward Bernays, Propaganda

This is pure authoritarianism. It’s the stuff of nightmares and revolutions. But for many years now a large subsection of the world has denied such a dynamic exists. It’s “conspiracy theory” and “tinfoil hattery” to claim that a small number of elites work together in secret to control public perception and govern our society from the shadows. After all, where is the proof?

Twitter has long denied that they “shadow ban” users, but this was a lie. The data shows that small groups within Twitter called “strategic response teams” suppressed up to 200 accounts per day. Usually these were accounts of larger and more influential conservative politicians and celebrities. And, these teams operated in coordination with Democrat officials and agencies like the FBI. In some cases the goal was to mute a particular individual. In other cases the goal was to steer national elections.

Why ridiculous official propaganda still works

By C.J. Hopkins, published 02 April 2019
https://titaniclifeboatacademy.org/index.php/19-articles/techno-socio-milieu/160-why-ridiculous-official-propaganda-still-works.html
The primary aim of official propaganda is to generate an “official narrative” that can be mindlessly repeated by the ruling classes and those who support and identify with them. This official narrative does not have to make sense, or to stand up to any sort of serious scrutiny. Its factualness is not the point.
The point is to draw a Maginot line, a defensive ideological boundary, between “the truth” as defined by the ruling classes and any other “truth” that contradicts their narrative.
Imagine this Maginot line as a circular wall surrounded by inhospitable territory. Inside the wall is “normal” society, gainful employment, career advancement, and all the other considerable benefits of cooperating with the ruling classes. Outside the wall is poverty, anxiety, social and professional stigmatization, and various other forms of suffering.
Which side of the wall do you want to be on? Every day, in countless ways, each of us are asked and have to answer this question. Conform, and there’s a place for you inside. Refuse, and… well, good luck out there.
In short, official propaganda is not designed to deceive the public (no more than the speeches in an actor’s script are intended to deceive the actor who speaks them). It is designed to be absorbed and repeated, no matter how implausible or preposterous it might be. Actually, it is often most effective when those who are forced to robotically repeat it know that it is utter nonsense, as the humiliation of having to do so cements their allegiance to the ruling classes (this phenomenon being a standard feature of the classic Stockholm Syndrome model, and authoritarian conditioning generally).
Among the recent highlights was The Washington Post’s “Russians Hacked the Vermont Power Grid” story, which it turned out involved neither Russians nor hackers, nor the Vermont power grid’s actual computers, and was basically just another made-up story.

Russian operation hacked a Vermont utility, showing risk to U.S. electrical grid security, officials say
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Russian hackers had penetrated the U.S. electric grid. Authorities say there is no indication of that so far.
The computer at Burlington Electric that was hacked was not attached to the grid.

Congress authorized propaganda against americans

The mainstream media became far more systemically involved as the government’s tool to spread propaganda after two vital changes were made to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included an amendment that legalized the use of propaganda on the American public.
The Smith-Mundt Act prevented the government from engaging in propaganda domestically. Nevertheless, that restriction was only applied domestically.
The U.S. government always had official propaganda programming produced by the Broadcasting Board of Governors that was only for foreign consumption such as Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks

Deliberate media propaganda in US

The media now knows that “militant” is a term of official propaganda, yet still use it for America’s drone victims
The New York Times reported that the Obama administration, in order to conceal civilian deaths caused by their drone attacks, “counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants”
The US mainstream media is not only classing all victims - regardless of known status - as “militants”, it is actively censoring actual reports of civilian deaths
This is the same American media that loves to mock Pakistanis for being so very propagandized
