Government

There is no government without the consent of the governed

The people who love the state and the government are called Statists. They just love to be told what to do and how to live their life.
Statism is THE MOST dangerous religion in the world, because people believe that slavery must continue in order to prevent “chaos”.
What the Statists don’t think about is that Government is already chaos: lies, coercion, violence, and slavery = government.

A man without a government is like a fish without a bicycle.
– Alvaro Koplovich

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
– George Washington

When a long train of abuses and usurpations […] evinces a design to reduce them [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government.
– Thomas Jefferson, US Declaration of Independence

Government is nothing but men acting in concert. The morality and value of government, like any other association of men, will be no greater and no less than the morality and value of the men comprising it. Since government is nothing but men, its inherent authority to act is in no way greater or different than the authority to act of individuals in isolation.
Government has no ‘magic powers’ or ‘authority’ not possessed by private individuals. Let he who asserts that government may do that which the individual may not assume the onus of proof and demonstrate his contention.
– Chris Lyspooner, Ludwig von Mises Institute

Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.
– Theodore Roosevelt, April 19, 1906

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.
– Theodore Roosevelt, 1918

Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.
– Harry S Truman

Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of government. The history of liberty is the history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of the limitation of governmental power, not the increase of it.
– Thomas Woodrow Wilson

In order to rally people, governments need enemies. They want us to be afraid, to hate, so we will rally behind them. And if they do not have a real enemy, they will invent one in order to mobilize us.
– Thich Nhat Hanh - Vietnamese monk, activist and writer

Government is formed by depriving all persons of a portion of their natural rights. The rights they enjoy under government are not conferred by it, but are those of which they have not been deprived. It is only by a deprivation of all persons of a portion of their rights that it is possible to form and maintain government…
Government is an abstract entity. It spreaks and acts through agents; these hold offices under law, constitutional or statutory, with prescribed duties and limited authority.
– Dictionary of Law 1889

Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. Even if all are miserable, all will believe themselves happy, because the government will tell them that they are so.
– Bertrand Russell, Bertrand Russell’s Best (ed. Routledge, 2009) - ISBN: 9781134027200

As I watch government at all levels daily eat away at our freedom, I keep thinking how prosperity and government largesse have combined to make most of us fat and lazy and indifferent to, or actually in favor of, the limits being placed on that freedom.
– Lyn Nofziger

The state has, in order to control us, introduced division into our thinking, so that we come to distrust others and look to the state for protection! But the roots of our individualism remind us that what we are is inseparable from the source from which all others derive; that coercive practices that threaten our neighbor also threaten us.
– Butler Shaffer

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison.
– Henry David Thoreau

Tony Benn’s 5 key questions to government:

  • What power have you got?
  • Where did you get it from?
  • In whose interests do you exercise it?
  • To whom are you accountable?
  • How do we get rid of you?
