The politicians are either hungry for power and control, or completely ignorant of the effects of their decisions. In either case they inevitably make bad decisions.
But we cannot underestimate the human creativity. Humans will always find a way to overcome any bad decisions made by their politicians.

Among America’s political elite, Reuters found that: 5 Living Presidents, 2 Supreme Court Justices, 11 Governors & 100 Legislators… descend from ancestors who enslaved Black people.
More than 100 U.S. leaders - lawmakers, presidents, governors and justices – have slaveholding ancestors, a Reuters examination found. Few are willing to talk about their ties to America’s “original sin”.
Ancestral ties to slaveholders have been documented previously for a handful of leaders, including Biden, Obama and McConnell. Scholars and journalists have also extensively examined slavery and its legacy, including how the North profited from the institution, and the role slavery played in decisions of past political leaders during the formation of America and after emancipation.
