Laws are made by people, for people
Laws are made by people, for people and they are flexible and dynamic.
Laws are not written in stone, like the 10 Commandments given to Moses by God.
And because they are made by humans, they should not be a moral compass to anybody.
And historically speaking, they were not always moral, or humane.
For many years, some people were allowed to be owners of other people and treat them like slaves.
For many years, experiments on people were legal, and they were later banned in Geneva Conventions and other international treaties.
For many years, women were considered inferior to men and it still happens today in some Muslim countries.
The laws are written in a computer, uploaded on a website, or printed on a piece paper. They CAN and MUST be changed when they no longer serve us: the people benefiting from them.
There are so many laws and they are so complicated, that even lawyers need to look them up and navigate them like a maze.
Actually, we might break a few tens of laws every day, unintentionally and without being aware of it.
WHY am I writing this text? Because:
- doing something IMMORAL or INHUMANE cannot be excused by: “I’m not doing anything illegal!”
- doing something IMMORAL or INHUMANE cannot be excused by: “I’m just following the law!”
In conclusion: your moral compass and basic human reasoning should be your compass in life.
And if the law no longer serves us, we should change it.
