Why Homeschool?

Key words:

Quotes

My favorite thing to do at school is … leaving ⭐

When one teaches, two learn.
– Robert Heinlein

Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion has no hold on the mind. Therefore do not use compulsion, but let early education be a sort of amusement; you will then be better able to discover the child’s natural bent.
– Plato

There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.
– Gandhi

The home is the first and most effective place to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self control, the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home.
– David O. McKay

School is the advertising agency which makes you believe that you need the society as it is.
– Ivan Illich

I suppose it is because nearly all children go to school nowadays and have things arranged for them that they seem so forlornly unable to produce their own ideas.
– Agatha Christie, Agatha Christie: An Autobiography

The plain fact is that education is itself a form of propaganda - a deliberate scheme to outfit the pupil, not with the capacity to weigh ideas, but with a simple appetite for gulping ideas ready-made.
The aim is to make ‘good’ citizens, which is to say, docile and uninquisitive citizens.
– H.L. Menchken

[The public school system is] usually a twelve year sentence of mind control.
Crushing creativity, smashing individualism, encouraging collectivism and compromise, destroying the exercise of intellectual inquiry, twisting it instead into meek subservience to authority.
– Walter Karp? or Thomas Jefferson?

Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child’s nature.
– Charlotte Mason

All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.
– Sir Walter Scott

Don’t limit a child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.
– Rabindranath Tagore

Though many teachers would claim to teach their students ‘how to think’, most would say that they do this indirectly or implicitly in the course of teaching the content which belongs to their special subject. Increasingly, educators have come to doubt the effectiveness of teaching ‘thinking skills’ in this way, because most students simply do not pick up the thinking skills in question.
– Alex Fisher, Critical Thinking book

Schools train people to be ignorant, with style. They give you the equipment that you need to be a functional ignoramus. American schools do not equip you to deal with things like logic; they don’t give you the criteria by which to judge between good and bad in any medium or format; and they prepare you to be a usable victim for military-industrial complex that needs manpower.
As long as you’re just smart enough to do a job and just dumb enough to swallow what they feed you, you’re gonna be alright. But if you go beyond that then you’re gonna have these grave doubts that give you stomach problems, headaches… make you want to go out and do something else. So, I believe that schools mechanically and very specifically try and breed out any hint of creative thought in the kids that are coming out.
– Frank Zappa

Home education network Ireland

https://henireland.org
Home education allows children to learn about the world and their place in it all the while surrounded by their families and communities.
It provides a rich, broad learning experience and whether families choose to follow a curriculum or to follow their child’s interests, the pace is that of the child. It is not complicated, because parents know their children and are there to answer questions and guide them.

https://everymum.ie/kids/school-kids-5-12-yrs/homeschooling-in-ireland
There has been growing interest in homeschooling in recent months, due in part to the disruption caused by COVID-19. Families may also choose to home-educate their children for religious reasons or to have greater control over the education of their children. Hazel Katherine Larkin explains the realities and benefits of homeschooling in Ireland.

Homeschooling resource for Why and How

http://homeschoolingwhyandhow.com
In Homeschooling: Why and How, Gail Nagasako shares the essentials of why over a million families have chosen to homeschool and how they go about it. Drawing from over twenty years of experience as a homeschool support group leader, counselor and the mother of a now-grown homeschooled son, Ms. Nagasako shows you homeschooling is easier than you think. You can provide a full, robust education tailored specifically to your child’s personality, talents, difficulties and learning style and still have lots of time left over to enjoy your family life together.

How effective is home education?

https://henireland.org/how-effective-is-home-education
Much of home education is based on conversational, informal, non-structured and opportunistic methodologies and its mechanisms are difficult to quantify. However, there is no doubt among researchers in home education, of the effectiveness of the process. It can be difficult to quantify and compare schooled children with home educated children, particularly when there is little traditional record of the child’s learning process.

Ireland citizens information - Teaching your child at home

https://tusla.ie/services/family-community-support/alternative-education-assessment-and-registration-service
https://citizensinformation.ie/en/education/the_irish_education_system/home_education.html
You have a constitutional right to educate your children at home. If you choose to home-school your child, you do not need a formal teaching qualification. You do not need to follow the national curriculum but you must ensure that your child receives a certain minimum education. You can choose a suitable approach you based on your child’s learning needs and appropriate to their age, aptitude and ability.
Home education is a positive option for many families who find that school does not meet their children’s needs. There are many different reasons that families choose home education for their children and there are many different educational styles and methods to explore.

Just found out the primary school teacher who terrorised me as a child died last year… Good fucking riddance

https://reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/wis8la/just_found_out_the_primary_school_teacher_who

From the age of 8 to 11 I had the same teacher in primary school. This woman is a pretty large contributor for most of my childhood trauma. She used to bully me in front of the class, encourage other kids to bully and harass me, and in general made life hell.
My parents went to her over other kids bullying me (I didn’t know what she was doing was wrong at the time) and this only made things worse. Everyday she’d find something to mock me about and then the children would pretty much use whatever that was against me.
I attempted suicide at 11 years old over what this woman did to me, a child.
