Carrot and stick
Carrot & stick is a method of forcing animals, people, organizations and countries into submission, to do something they don’t like, or don’t want (including unhealthy, immoral or illegal things).
When a controller wants to persuade somebody to do something it has 3 options:
- carrot only (reward, incentive, nudge): if the reward is substantial enough, even if the reason is not solid, people can do something they don’t necessarily like
- stick only (all stick and no carrot, punishment, inconvenience): if there’s no reward, but there’s a financial punishment or big enough inconvenience, people can also do the think they don’t want, but it’s much worse than carrot method because people lose confidence, become either depressed or angry
- carrot & stick is usually the sweet spot used by most controlling rulers, to make sure the subjects take the bait, but it’s still worse than carrot method
The best method of persuasion is a good enough reason, because when people understand why they are doing the thing they don’t necessarily like, at least they understand why it’s important, so they are willing to do it for the greater good, which is a reward in itself, and more rewards are not needed.
Every time there’s a reward involved, it shows that the controller has an agenda and it becomes desperate, because the reasoning is not good enough.
Of course, the reward is costly for the controller, so it will try to convince the subjects first, because it’s cheaper.
When the stick is used, it shows the controller is really desperate and hopes that with force, another percent will obey.
Example:
- carrot: if your country implements a law for allowing us to cut down your forests, you will receive a big bonus and our companies will produce a lot of money and new jobs in your country
- danger: cutting the forests has devastating environmental impact, insects and animals going extinct, terrain erosion, desertification, flooding, climate change, etc. The reputation of the people allowing the law to pass will be forever tainted.
- stick: if you don’t allow us to cut the forests, we won’t help you or your country to get “X” that you really want (a loan, a business deal, etc)
Quotes
Only when we are unable to communicate our vision efficiently that we proceed to rewarding or punishing others.
It’s when we have a vision and fail at convincing others or when we do not accept that others can do things differently, then we feel under the obligation to reward the ones who obey us and punish the ones who don’t.
It may start with a very pure intention like with parents educating their children but they have no idea what we are installing in their children.
The more power you have, the more dangerous this gets.
Today, our education system gave us people who can organise themselves to achieve great things that weren’t possible before, but at the same time this system discourages and alienates anyone who follows their own moral standards and dreams.
So if you have power, no matter how small or big, but you choose not play the game of reward and punishment to get what you want, then I salute you, the world needs you,
Your investment in achieving your goals the proper way will pay off eventually as you are building a team based on love and shared principles and not fear or greed.
Doing things the right way isn’t easy at first but it’s the only thing that works in long term.
