Android OS
The https://android.com operating system is a good idea, but unfortunately it’s infested with spyware.
But the worst is, your phone can install tracking software without your consent or knowledge, just because Google sais so. The crappy software can start Wifi, Bluetooth on its own and drain your battery (amongst other things).
Android is by default, worse for your privacy than iOS, but a lot of the code is open-source, so there are lots of safe forks and spin-offs.
At least on Android phones (unlike iOS), someone can unlock the bootloader, the recovery and re-install any other Android (or possibly Linux) implementation.
The good news, there’s lots of Android-compatible alternatives:
-
https://calyxos.org – CalyxOS: Everyone needs a phone, not everyone wants to be spied on
-
https://e.foundation/e-os – eOS is a complete, fully deGoogled, mobile ecosystem
-
https://grapheneos.org – GrapheneOS is a privacy and security focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility
-
https://lineageos.org – LineageOS is a free and open-source operating system for various devices, based on Android
-
https://sailfishos.org – mobile OS with built-in privacy (can also run Android apps)
Worth mentioning:
-
http://postmarketos.org – Linux distribution for phones and other mobile devices (based on Alpine Linux)
-
https://ubuntu-touch.io – Ubuntu Touch for phones and tablets an alternative to Android and iOS
